The essence of what I try to do as an artist is to give weight to an intangible experience, to express its emotional gravity in materials, forms and textures that our senses can access. I often begin with a general idea or feeling that I am personally invested in, and then choose materials that I am curious about. Usually my selections hold a kind of resonant associative character, or some potential for metaphor that I hope to bring forth. Then, as I work, I discover each piece through the process of making. I have dealt largely with issues of feminism, race, sexuality, and spirituality particularly how those broader cultural concerns impact the identity and self worth of individual women in our culture. I also usually work in several ways at once, each method or medium informing the other. I like to employ techniques that have been thought of as craft or low art and push through those expectations by using them in unexpected ways. I am fascinated by the characteristics of different materials and try to integrate their natural properties and flaws by using them honestly. Since I learn by doing the evidence of my hand is a big part of the finished product, and I celebrate the self-taught, the awkward, and the mistake as part of my overall aesthetic.
